Denali (McKinley) expedition in Alaska

Plan a Denali expedition in Alaska, with a structure that differs from a conventional guided climb. Mirando al Sur’s 21-day programme is led by a mountain guide with previous summit experience, while the expedition members manage their own participation under the leader’s supervision.

There are no porters. Participants move their equipment by backpack and pulka and contribute to camp life. The trip is for mountaineers prepared for that involvement, with fitness and experience appropriate to sustained activity and altitude.

Your mountain trip with Mirando al Sur

A light-aircraft flight to the Kahiltna Glacier brings the team into a remote mountain environment. Rope teams, loads, shared equipment and recovery are part of the expedition experience alongside the climbing objective.

The programme notes that ski-touring equipment can be useful between camps for participants with the right skills. Its use, particularly on the upper mountain, must be assessed individually; the full route is not presented as a ski descent suitable for everyone.

Trip itinerary

  1. Days 1–4: Travel and preparation. Fly to Anchorage, stay on arrival, transfer to Talkeetna and prepare logistics, including the ranger briefing. The programme includes the stated arrival and Talkeetna accommodation.
  2. Day 5: Kahiltna Glacier. Fly to Base Camp, subject to flying conditions.
  3. Days 5–18: Expedition phase. Move between camps, carry loads, rest and attempt the ascent according to the leader’s plan and the team’s progress.
  4. Days 19–20: Leave the mountain. Fly back to Talkeetna when weather allows, then transfer to Anchorage.
  5. Day 21: Departure. Return flight from Anchorage.

Frequently asked questions

Is this a fully guided expedition?

No. It is described as led and self-managed. The leader supervises and coordinates, while members take an active role in expedition organisation and mountain activity.

Who carries the equipment?

The participants themselves. There are no porters; backpacks and pulkas are used. Load sharing and preparation are discussed with the leader.

Can I use skis?

The programme recognises their value for moving between camps when participants have the necessary skills. The final section is only appropriate for very strong skiers and requires specific assessment.

Is the glacier flight included?

Yes. The programme includes return flights between Talkeetna and Kahiltna Base Camp. International travel to Anchorage is separate.

What baggage allowance is stated for the aircraft?

The document gives a maximum reference of 57 kg. Confirm the operator’s current allowance when preparing the equipment; excess baggage is not included.

Are meals and hotels covered in the same way?

No. The stated overnight stays are room-only. Meals are separate costs, although the organisation helps coordinate expedition food purchasing.

What if departure from the mountain is delayed?

Glacier flights depend on weather. Costs from changes and extra overnight stays are not included; review margins, insurance and booking conditions in advance.
